Course Description:

This training course covers essential skills for working with suspended scaffolds, including how to visually inspect scaffold equipment, identify key components, and safely assemble and disassemble scaffold systems. Students will actively participate in hands-on exercises involving various types of suspended scaffolding and rigging operations to ensure practical learning.

The instructor will evaluate each student’s ability to perform critical tasks such as applying rope knots, terminating wire rope, constructing a block and tackle system, and operating scaffold hoist motors. Students will also complete an independent multiple-choice final exam to demonstrate their understanding.

Please note that the course fee does not include the cost of issuing an identification card or site safety training card, if required.

CEU Requirements
  1. 100% attendance for the cours
  2. Completion of Continuing Education and Training Registration Form
  3. Active participation in all class exercises (determined by course instructor)
  4. Completion of required pre-and post-quiz assessment
  5. As applicable, achievement of minimum passing score on required end-of-course examination
  6. Participation and submittal of end-of-course evaluation form (must provide name on form to receive credit)
Audience:
This course is intended for workers who are renewing an expired or soon to be expired 16 Hour User Suspended Scaffold or 8 Hour User Suspended Scaffold ID card to continue to use suspended scaffolds in NYC.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
 
  • Identify suspended scaffold systems and their essential components
  • Identify the most common suspended scaffold hazards
  • Explain how to prevent exposure to suspended scaffold hazards
  • Identify New York City Department of Buildings and OSHA regulations that pertain to scaffold design and use
  • Demonstrate ability to properly inspect and attach personal fall arrest system used by suspended scaffold workers
  • Apply various knots and hitches to hoisting and fall protection scenarios
  • Assemble block and tackle for a fiber rope light duty scaffold
  • Construct the wire rope termination for hoisting rope on suspended scaffolds.
Methods of Instruction:
A combination of lectures, PowerPoint presentations, open discussions, and testing will be used throughout the course.
Prerequisites:
Students attending this course should have previously taken a 16 Hour User Suspended Scaffold or 8 Hour User Suspended Scaffold Refresher within the last 4 years from an approved training provider. The expired or soon to be expired card must be presented prior to the start of the course.
Successful Completion:
In order to receive a certificate/card for the course, students must:
  • Be able to clearly communicate with the instructor and complete all paperwork in the language the course is delivered. No personal interpreters permitted. 
  • Complete all required paperwork: registration, evaluation, attendance, etc.
  • Attend all required hours of the course. Any make up sessions must be completed within six months from the course start date.
  • Participate during class activities and reviews.
  • Complete tests with a passing grade of 70%.
Training Requirements for 8 Hour Suspended Scaffold User Refresher
In accordance with section 3314.4.5.4 of the 2014 NYC Construction Codes, this 8-Hour Refresher course is required by the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) for individuals who wish to continue working on suspended scaffolds in New York City. If an individual does not renew their certification within the designated time frame, they will no longer be eligible for the 8-Hour Refresher and must retake the original 16-hour course to regain eligibility
 
Attendance Policy: 
Students are required to complete 100% of the course and actively participate in all learning activities. Make-up time is not permitted for this training course.
