Course Description:

In this 16-hour course, students will receive an overview of OSHA and NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) regulations and suspended scaffold standards, with a focus on recognizing and preventing hazardous conditions. Topics will cover the visual inspection of suspended scaffold equipment, understanding basic scaffold components, and the proper methods for assembling and disassembling scaffolds. Students will also engage in hands-on exercises that involve demonstrating, constructing, and utilizing various scaffolding and rigging techniques.

The instructor will evaluate each student's ability to apply rope knots, terminate wire rope, build a block and tackle system, and operate scaffold hoist motors. Additionally, students will complete an independent multiple-choice final exam.

Please note that the course fee does not cover the cost of issuing an ID card or site safety training card, if applicable.

CEU Requirements
  1. 100% attendance for the cours
  2. Completion of Continuing Education and Training Registration Form
  3. Active participation in all class exercises (determined by course instructor)
  4. Completion of required pre-and post-quiz assessment
  5. As applicable, achievement of minimum passing score on required end-of-course examination
  6. Participation and submittal of end-of-course evaluation form (must provide name on form to receive credit)
Audience:
Any individual who is required to use or work on a suspended scaffold in New York City.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Identify suspended scaffold systems and their essential components.

  • Identify the most common suspended scaffold hazards.

  • Explain how to prevent exposure to suspended scaffold hazards.

  • Identify New York City Department of Buildings and OSHA regulations that pertain to scaffold design and use.

  • Demonstrate ability to properly inspect and attach personal fall arrest system used by suspended scaffold workers.

  • Apply various knots and hitches to hoisting and fall protection scenarios.

  • Assemble block and tackle for a fiber rope light duty scaffold.

  • Construct wire rope termination for hoisting rope on suspended scaffolds.

Methods of Instruction:
A combination of lectures, PowerPoint presentations, open discussions, and testing will be used throughout the course.
Prerequisites:
There are no prerequisites needed to attend this course. Students must be able to verbally communicate with instructor in primary language of the training.
Successful Completion:
In order to receive a certificate/card for the course, students must:
  • Be able to clearly communicate with the instructor and complete all paperwork in the language the course is delivered. No personal interpreters permitted. 
  • Complete all required paperwork: registration, evaluation, attendance, etc.
  • Attend all required hours of the course. Any make up sessions must be completed within six months from the course start date.
  • Participate during class activities and reviews.
  • Complete tests with a passing grade of 70%.

 
Training Requirements for 8 Hour Suspended Scaffold Supervisor Refresher
As per 3314.4.5.4 of the NYC Construction Codes, this course is required by the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) to use or work on suspended scaffolds in New York City.
 
Attendance Policy: 
Students are required to complete 100% of the course and actively participate in all learning activities. Make-up time is not permitted for this training course.
